Learning Expeditions Innovation in Mental Health

Learning Expeditions are study trips.  Although ‘trip’ is not the correct word for what we offer. We like to call it our Learning Expeditions. It’s not tourism, it’s hard labour. Physically, the journey will tire you out. Mentally however, you will gain inspiration and energy for years to come.

Real life experiences, gathered on the spot, simply last longer in your memory than insights from a textbook. Research has demonstrated: you have to get away from home to gather new beliefs and knowledge.

Learning by doing, learning by sharing

Participants start a dialogue with each other and with the culture they visit. All of them recognize the undeniable impact of travel on how they learn. Years later, the inspiring and knowledge-enhancing nature of the trips will linger on. Frequently participants have made personal choices during their learning expedition that directly led to success and a turning point in their professional and personal life.

Since 2002

The Learning Expeditions are a concept developed by Rokus Loopik. Since 2002 he has organized these trips for people working in Mental Health and consumers – Loopik originally started out as a nurse about 35 years ago. Ove 250 people have so far travelled with him to various cities in the world; New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Vermont, Bucharest, Kansas, Gent, Brussel, Antwerpen, Poughkeepsie, Glasgow, Netherlands, Norway, etcetera.

A different perspective of Mental Healthcare

The Learning Expeditions spring from a differing professional view on Mental Health, as well as from personal motives. The initiators are convinced that the expeditions provide participants with an alternative take on Mental Health. We do not propagat care systems which focus mainly on quantity and numerical performance, but Mental Health Programs and People who focus on talents and on making a positive contribution to the lives of people with severe challenges.

For seven days participants will visit a variety of educational institutions in New York and other cities.

The aim of the Expeditions

Our goal is to take professionals away out of their natural environment and to confront them with new, different, innovative ways of teaching. By traveling abroad professionals can’t rely on their old beliefs. They will need to adjust to a new, often strange culture. This offers participants a chance to gain unexpected insights and inspiration, to network, to meet people they would otherwise never meet and thus to broaden their horizons.

All things considered, participants build up new beliefs and new innovative energy, with which they can initiate new projects within their institutions, after returning to their home country. The effect of these trips is phenomenal. Long after their return, people witness a changed view of their believes, convictions and work.

Are you willing to broaden your horizon? Are you interested in a mind blowing experience?
